In only six more days, I will see the culmination of a long-term personal project, the publication of my debut memoir: I Asked the Blue Heron.
As I check off items from the long to-do list leading to this important event in my life, I feel my pulse accelerating, my apprehensions and fears exploding.
I continue because I am proud of my work. I wrote an entire book in a second language. I went through a difficult process of revisiting painful memories to discover the strong woman within me.
My work needed a lot of editing and the good advise of great friends and mentors. Once finished, I have planned, formatted, designed the cover and back, bought my copyright and my ISBN, and uploaded into a website. I have sent individual invitations, and informed my readers on this website. I have rented a space, contracted a catering company, and rented chairs and tables.
On Nov. 4 the book will be out in the universe. I will host a humble release party at Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City, CA from 3 to 5 p.m.
This is how I hope it will go on after that: At first only some of the friends I invited will buy and read the book. But I hope with time, my hard work will pay off, and then people who don’t know me will buy and read I Asked the Blue Heron.
And I hope those who read it know, that like my dear friend Zoë Graves, they too can be enlightened witnesses in somebody’s life. They also can rescue somebody from abuse and mentor them to live a better life. I hope they learn that life can be fulfilling after a mental illness diagnose.
Starting Nov. 4, I Asked the Blue Heron will be available for purchase on this site and in major online retail platforms.
